Travel Talk

Each week the group will learn about a different culture or destination in the world. Members will learn about the topic at home during the week as able, and later discuss what they know or have learned in class. Topics will include the people, food, music, art, social practices, and important landmarks connected to a culture or place. Come explore the world with us!

Members watch/listen to brief video/audio clips, podcasts, TED Talks, etc. Members discuss content and share opinions. All communication abilities welcome!

Yoga For All Abilities

All are welcome in this gentle mat-based or seated yoga class. Supporting a range of abilities and needs, this class is open to both members and care partners.

Listen Up

This class focuses on auditory comprehension, getting the details and understanding conversation. Practice listening to phone messages, podcasts and verbal instructions.

THRIVE Yoga

All are welcome in this gentle mat-based or seated yoga class. Our skilled instructor will meet participants where they are with a whole-body approach to healing and mindfulness. Supporting a range of abilities and needs, this class is open to both members and care partners.

Speak Up!

This class is designed to improve the clarity and loudness of your speech. Members will participate in exercises and conversation to improve overall speech intelligibility.

Brain Benders

Focuses on both high level word retrieval and thinking skills simultaneously with an emphasis on memory, mental control and reasoning.

What's the Word III

Focuses on structured practice with word retrieval exercises and strategies. For members who benefit from multi-modal strategies and supported communication.

Talk It Out

This class is appropriate for members who want to discuss what’s on their mind at the conversational level. Word finding strategies are emphasized.

Text Thread

Practice reading and writing using the chat box to ask and answer questions. No talking allowed. Must be able to use the chat box and read / write at the phrase level.

Verbs

This class focuses on regular and irregular verbs, accurate verb tense usage and vocabulary expansion. Must be able to produce verbal speech at the word to phrase level.

Class focuses on multi-modal communication and use of supports (speech, writing, pictures, gestures, etc.) to express ideas on topics of interest.

Tech Tools for Writing

Members will practice using talk-to-text or other technology to improve personal writing skills on computers, smartphones or other electronic devices. For members who write at the word or short sentence level.

What's the Word II

This class focuses on structured practice with word retrieval exercises and strategies. For members who communicate at the sentence/basic conversation level and frequently can’t find the right word.

THRIVE Helping Hands 2

This 30-minute upper-body focused class emphasizes hand and finger dexterity, shoulder mobility, core strength, and gentle stretching. This class is best suited for those members with the ability to open and close their hand regardless of strength.

Gentle/adaptive yoga class designed for participants with mobility challenges. Our skilled instructor gets to know each member and will meet you where you are in your yoga practice.

Global Leaders

Watch select videos at home and come together to practice communication skills while discussing global leaders, entertainers, artists, activists, chosen by the group.

THRIVE Function: Hand Power

Join us for hand-focused fun! An emphasis on fine motor skills and hand strengthening. Class will be tailored to your needs for both the affected and unaffected hand. All levels of mobility/function are welcome.

Memory 101

Learn and practice strategies to recall and retain information recently seen, heard or discussed to improve daily functioning.

THRIVE No Limits Fitness

A fun-filled High-Intensity Interval Training class. Each class will include four circuits of standing or seated exercises to give you a great, full-body workout. All abilities welcome.

This virtual class is for those who would like to practice their word retrieval skills in a game format. Play a sports-focused game, similar to Jeopardy, with changing categories and have fun having face-to-face communication from the comfort of home!

Watch a movie, that the class has decided on, during the week and then come together to discuss the characters, plot and themes. This class is appropriate for members communicating at the sentence or conversation level.

Use music as a tool to help drive positive outcomes in speech, cognition, motor skills, and emotional well-being. Our music therapist will incorporate participants’ musical preferences in this fun and interactive research-based class.

Big Ideas

This class will improve your ability to spontaneously discuss ideas and practice public speaking skills. This group is for members who want to challenge their language with impromptu discussions of member-selected material from sources such as news articles, podcasts, and TED Talks.

Book Club

Read a book or listen to the audio book. Discuss the content of the reading or specific assignments with supported conversation. Average number of pages read per week is 30 – 40.

This class will focus on summarizing, note taking and synthesizing and organizing information presented auditorily or visually.

This group focuses on extemporaneous communication. Members will work in teams to come up with talking points on opposing sides of various issues.

Communication Toolbox

This class emphasizes communication through high and low tech communication devices to get out both the basics and the fun stuff. This class is for members with significant aphasia and/or apraxia.

Write It / Edit It

This group emphasizes writing and editing at the sentence and paragraph levels. Members complete a weeky writing assignment at home. During class, members assist one another with editing suggestions.

Movie Talk: Documentaries

Members will pick a documentary to watch during the week. We’ll talk about the movie and whatever issues it brings up about the world. All communication abilities are welcome.

Sports Talk

Supported conversation and in-depth communication centered on sports. A variety of communication levels can participate in this group.

Girl Talk

Miss conversations with just the ladies? This class is intended for those who would like to connect with other women to discuss topics of interest. All communication abilities are welcome.

Sharks

Practice communication, comprehension and number skills by debating episodes of Shark Tank or playing cards.

Read Out Loud

For anyone who wants to work on reading comprehension, retention and reading efficiency. Emphasis is on oral reading.

Top 100 Films

Film lovers will watch movies from American Film Institute’s Top 100 List on their own. During class, members will discuss the film’s characters, plot and themes.

TV Talk: True Crime Documentary

Members will watch and discuss true crime stories. You be the jury!

Social Success Boot Camp

Members will discuss and practice strategies to read the (Zoom) room and take the other person’s perspective. Will cover topics like eye contact, taking the conversational floor, and choosing when to say something you’d say to a close friend vs. mixed company.

Big Picture Politics

This class will focus on discussion of broad political topics chosen by members. Topics may include America’s reputation abroad, historical revisionism, the future of political parties and issues facing America, in general.

Murder Mysteries

Focus on speech clarity, language use and problem-solving as you work through the clues with your group to solve the murder mystery cases.

Article Club

Each week the group selects a 10-15 page article to read/listen to (on their own) from publications like the New York Times Magazine, New Yorker, Outside, Vanity Fair, Atlantic. We will discuss the article in class.

TV Talk: TURИ: Washington's Spies

Members will watch and discuss this Netflix series based on Alexander Rose’s book Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring (2007), a history of the Culper Ring.

Biographies

Come explore famous people throughout history. Members will choose, research, and discuss various notable people weekly.

Virtual Vacations

Take a virtual vacation every week! Group members will present previous travel destinations or research a vacation spot and present to the group for discussion. All communication abilities welcome!

Outdoor Adventures

Discuss selected recreational outdoor activities which change weekly. We will discuss topics and learn techniques from our members who love to hunt, fish and do anything else outdoors.

I Can Do That!

Practice one handed techniques for everyday tasks, learning about tools and gadgets to help get things done and conserve energy.

TV Talk: Chernobyl

Discuss the HBO drama Chernobyl. It’s a 5 episode story about the 1986 nuclear disaster. You’ll need access to HBO Max to view it.

Comic Relief

Watch and discuss famous comedians from the 20th Century. Communicate ideas and opinions about each comic’s style, what makes their stand-up work and overall just have a good laugh.

Selected Topics Together

This is a class for both the SCC member with significant aphasia and/or apraxia and a partner. Group focuses on practicing reading, writing, listening, and talking using supported conversation techniques and strategies including multi-modal communication (speech, writing, gestures, etc.).

Top Ten Films

Film lovers will watch movies from American Film Institute’s Top Ten Lists on their own. During class we’ll discuss the films characters, plot and themes.

Discuss the HBO biographic miniseries about President John Adams.

Everyday Writing

Aimed at practicing personal writing skills for every day, including social letters, greeting cards, filling out forms and personal and business emails. For members who can write words and sentences.

Letter Games

Use online letter games like WordTwist and Scramble Words to practice spelling and thinking of words. For members who need extra time to manipulate letters into new words.

Google Scavenger Hunt

Practice spelling and reading by finding information online, from the hours of a favorite coffee shop to photos that represent your current mood.

Discuss current events, politics free. This group focuses on expressing an opinion at the word/phrase level.

This is a class for both the SCC member and a communication partner. For emerging communicators with significant aphasia and/or apraxia or those who want to practice the technique of supported conversation with a family member/friend. Practice holistic wellness of body and mind using yoga and qigong. Combine stretching, breathing, meditation, and energetic movement to relieve stress and tension. Exercises include standing postures as well as seated postures which can be done in a chair. Classes are easy and fun and are designed to help maximize your wellness.

Life in Pictures

Use pictures that you take weekly as a basis for discussion. All communication abilities welcome!
