Supported Writing

This class is for members with significant aphasia who want to improve their word level writing skills, play word games and practice using writing as a compensatory strategy for communication.

Each week the group will learn about a different culture or destination in the world. Members will learn about the topic at home during the week as able, and later discuss what they know or have learned in class. Topics will include the people, food, music, art, social practices, and important landmarks connected to a culture or place. Come explore the world with us!

Talk It Out

This class is appropriate for members who want to discuss what’s on their mind at the conversational level. Word finding strategies are emphasized.

Text Thread

Practice reading and writing using the chat box to ask and answer questions. No talking allowed. Must be able to use the chat box and read / write at the phrase level.

Verbs

This class focuses on regular and irregular verbs, accurate verb tense usage and vocabulary expansion. Must be able to produce verbal speech at the word to phrase level.

Tech Tools for Writing

Girl Talk

Miss conversations with just the ladies? This class is intended for those who would like to connect with other women to discuss topics of interest. All communication abilities are welcome.

Practice communication, comprehension and number skills by debating episodes of Shark Tank or playing cards.

Top 100 Films

Film lovers will watch movies from American Film Institute’s Top 100 List on their own. During class, members will discuss the film’s characters, plot and themes.

TV Talk: True Crime Documentary

Members will watch and discuss true crime stories. You be the jury!

Social Success Boot Camp

Members will discuss and practice strategies to read the (Zoom) room and take the other person’s perspective. Will cover topics like eye contact, taking the conversational floor, and choosing when to say something you’d say to a close friend vs. mixed company.

Big Picture Politics

This class will focus on discussion of broad political topics chosen by members. Topics may include America’s reputation abroad, historical revisionism, the future of political parties and issues facing America, in general.

Murder Mysteries

Focus on speech clarity, language use and problem-solving as you work through the clues with your group to solve the murder mystery cases.

Article Club

Each week the group selects a 10-15 page article to read/listen to (on their own) from publications like the New York Times Magazine, New Yorker, Outside, Vanity Fair, Atlantic. We will discuss the article in class.

TV Talk: TURИ: Washington's Spies

Members will watch and discuss this Netflix series based on Alexander Rose’s book Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring (2007), a history of the Culper Ring.

Come explore famous people throughout history. Members will choose, research, and discuss various notable people weekly.

Virtual Vacations

Take a virtual vacation every week! Group members will present previous travel destinations or research a vacation spot and present to the group for discussion. All communication abilities welcome!

Discuss the HBO drama Chernobyl. It’s a 5 episode story about the 1986 nuclear disaster. You’ll need access to HBO Max to view it.

Comic Relief

Watch and discuss famous comedians from the 20th Century. Communicate ideas and opinions about each comic’s style, what makes their stand-up work and overall just have a good laugh.

Google Scavenger Hunt

Practice spelling and reading by finding information online, from the hours of a favorite coffee shop to photos that represent your current mood.

Practice holistic wellness of body and mind using yoga and qigong. Combine stretching, breathing, meditation, and energetic movement to relieve stress and tension. Exercises include standing postures as well as seated postures which can be done in a chair. Classes are easy and fun and are designed to help maximize your wellness.
