Stroke Comeback Center's Schedule for 2006

Each 9-week session for our group programs have been
structured to include all levels of communication. You can enroll at any time unless the group is full.
Five is the maximum group size, allowing for everyone to participate and benefit.
The Center is open Mondays
- Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Hours on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday can vary. We suggest calling (703)
255-5221 to check on the schedule for those days.

SESSION 5: OCTOBER 23 - DECEMBER 22
|
MONDAYS
10:30 A.M. – 11:30 A.M. Conversation Club
Supported
conversation and in-depth communication centered around news, issues or topics that affect participants. This group will provide both conversation and presentation opportunities.
Topics will be selected in advance to allow time for group member preparation.
A peer leader will be chosen for each day. A variety of communication
levels are included in this group.
11:45 A.M. – 12:45 P.M. Week In Review
Supported
conversation and in-depth communication centered on news, current events, or topics that affect participants. This group will focus on verbal and nonverbal communication skills to express ideas and opinions. A variety of communication levels are included in this group. Multi-media will be used.
1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M.
Wild Card
Language
based activities that provide an opportunity to improve and incorporate use of logic, memory, calculation skills and reasoning. Activities may include board games, functional math, deduction/logic or word games. Skills needed to be successful in this group include basic functional reading skills
and multi-sentence auditory comprehension.
2:15
P.M. – 3:15 P.M.
Writing Tool Box I
This group provides an
opportunity to work on improving personal and professional writing skills including spelling and grammar. Computer use, email
templates and writing software can be reviewed and practiced based on group interest.
TOOL BOX I is for individuals who can write sentence to paragraph length
information.
3:30 P.M. – 4:30 P.M.
Book Club
Read a
condensed or regular version of a book, or listen to the book on tape. This group will center on discussion of the content
of the reading or on specific assignments for discussion.

TUESDAYS
10:00 A.M. - 2:30 P.M. Individual Sessions
Call for an appointment.
2:30 P.M. - 4:30 P.M. Show And A Nibble
This 2-hour group will be broken down into 2 parts. The first part will
include watching portions of a TV show or movie, then supported conversation and discussion regarding characters, plot, and
outcome. The second portion of the group will provide an opportunity for socialization, fun, food and continued discussion. Participants must attend both portions of the group. A variety of communication levels
are welcome to participate in this group. (this group will carry a fee of 1 ½ the standard group fee).

WEDNESDAYS

11:30 A.M Selected Topics
Supported
conversation centered around topics of interest. Focus is on expanding vocabulary
and sentence structure. A variety of communication levels can participate in
this group.
11:45 A.M. - 12:45 P.M. Writing Tool Box II
This
group provides an opportunity to work on improving personal and professional writing skills including spelling and grammar.
Computer use, email templates and writing software can be reviewed and practiced based on group interest. TOOL BOX II
in recommended for individual who write at the word to sentence level.
1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.
Reading For Life
This group is designed to develop basic reading abilities. The chosen reading material and
activities will allow members with limited reading skills to participate and to enjoy reading again.
2:00 P.M. – 3:30 P.M. Mind
Over Matter & Communication Strategies
This
group will meet for 1 1/2 hours and is intended for individuals with apraxia to develop basic vocabulary using the Mind Over
Matter program, then practice using verbal and nonverbal strategies to promote communication and participation in conversation
wth family, friends and in the community.
3:15
P.M. – 4:15 P.M. Snapshot Communication
This
group will use photos centered around a topic to develop and practice verbal and nonverbal strategies and communication assists
to promote participating in conversation with family, friends, and in the community.

SATURDAYS
Monthly - 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Speech Directions is a peer directed,
self -help group for people with aphasia and similar problems. A "Co-Survivors" group will be meeting at
the same time! It is fun, fullfilling and FREE. The date of
the next meeting is announced monthly on the Home page. Please join us!
